Genre: Feature Film-Action/Adventure
Rating: R
Release Date: 3-FEB-2004
Media Type: DVDHere's a movie that only a Steven Seagal fan could love. It's not nearly as good as Under Siege (the movie destined to remain Seagal's high-water mark), but not any worse than Above the Law. This time ol' Steve is an agent of the Environmental Protection Agency who's busting heads in Kentucky. He's on good terms with the local yokels (including Marg Helgenberger and Harry Dean Stanton), but locks horns with a slimy mogul (Kris Kristofferson) who'! s using abandoned mines to dump toxic waste. Along with an ecological message, Seagal serves up several broken limbs, cracked skulls, and bloody noses, and he even finds time to do some guitar picking with country boys such as Travis Tritt and Randy Travis. Once you've heard Seagal crooning a country tune, you'll be eager to see him go back to whuppin' the bad guys. --Jeff ShannonCan-do hero. Can't-miss action. Steven Seagal stars in and directs On Deadly Ground (Disc 1/Side A). He plays Forrest Taft, the roughest of Alaska's oil roughnecks...and bad news to a corporate big shot (Michael Caine), who put profits over environmental safety. Then he fires up Fire Down Below (Disc 1/Side B) as an EPA officer headed for an eco-showdown in Appalachian mining country. Co-stars include Kris Kristofferson and CSI Crime Scene Investigation's Marg Helgenberger. A gangster who leaves corpses as his calling cards runs up against Brooklyn cop Gino Felino (Seagal) in the thriller Ou! t for Justice (Disc 2), co-starring Jerry Orbach (Law & Order)! .Under S iege The Glimmer Man Above the Law Fire Down Below

Don't miss the fun in this hilariously sexy comedy that has Antonio Banderas (Once Upon a Time in Mexico), Madonna (Swept Away), and a sizzling all-star cast checking in for laughs!

It's Ted the Bellhop's (Tim Roth, Pulp Fiction) first night on the job...and the hotel's very unusual guests are about to place him in some outrageous predicaments. It seems that this evening's room service is serving up one unbelievable happening after another. Also featuring Marisa Tomei (Cyrus), Four Rooms is a wild night of highly original comedy entertainment you'll enjoy...without reservations. This unbearable quartet of stories was written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging), and Alexandre Rockwell (In the Soup), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. With Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas. --Tom Keogh Don't miss the fun in this hilariously sexy comedy that has Antonio Banderas (THE MASK OF ZORRO), Madonna (EVITA), and a sizzling all-star cast checking in for laughs! A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the! addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the addiction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else."Written with the support of the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Institute, this comprehensive cookbook shows how to incorporate the timeless principles of Ayurveda into the twenty-first century kitchen. A result of Miriam Kasin Hospodar's twenty-year culinary journey, "Heaven's Banquet" draws from a rich palette of international cuisines and teaches you how to match your diet to your mind-body type for maximum health and well-being. It contains over 700 surprisingl! y simple recipes, ranging from Thai Corn Fritters and Asian-Ca! jun Eggp lant Gumbo to West African Avocado Mousse and Mocha-Spice Cake with Coffee Cream Frosting. Readers will discover the most effective methods of preparing food, the benefits of eating seasonally for invidual types, and how to create a diet for the entire family. There are special sections on how to lose weight and control sugar sensitivity, a questionnaire to help determine mind-body type, and essential ingredients for a well-stocked Ayurvedic kitchen.

I Can't Give You Anything But Love #112864

  • Introduced In 2003

Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis star as Hannah Miller and Marty Gold, best friends and co-workers who suppress their smoldering desires, not wanting to spoil their friendship. Once they do take the plunge, though, they quickly discover that falling in love is the easy part! Together, they face some of life's biggest challengesâ€"love, work, love at work, and working at loveâ€"with humor, sophistication, and feeling in this unforgettable TV classic.Welcome to Chemistry 101, class. Anything but Love, a charming, quirky romantic-comedy series that debuted in 1989, stars Jamie-Lee Curtis, then at the height of her film career, and comedian Richard Lewis as journalistic colleagues with an undeniable romantic pull between them. The first volume of episodes showcases the crackling connection between Hannah (Curtis) and Marty (Lewis), which kept the show! fizzy, and not fizzled--like Cheers, Moonlighting, and other sitcoms in which romantic tension died after "the deed." Curtis shows her best screwball chops as an ace reporter, struggling with her feelings, her friendship, and her work assignments with Marty, who’s a fumbling but well-meaning foil. Besides the two stars, the show features a great sidekick in Ann Magnuson, and cool cameos; look for memorable appearances by John Ritter and an elegant Wendie Malick. The set includes 28 episodes on three discs; it spans slightly more than a full season, from its debut in March of 1989 as a mid-season replacement through that fall and the spring of 1990. Extras include commentaries by Curtis (still the mistress of the dryly witty crack), Lewis, and director Robert Berlinger, and two featurettes on the creation of and tidbits from the show, "All About Anything but Love and "Stories from the Set." Let the sparking begin. --A.T. HurleyRomantic, funny, ! tender love story about a struggling Cabaret singer who yearn! s for th e days of Audrey Hepburn and Rita Hayworth. Rated PG-13People in movies just don't break out into song and dance often enough anymore--at least that's the sentiment of Anything But Love, a throwback to the Fred & Ginger era. Sweet-voiced redhead Isabel Rose plays an aspiring songbird in present-day Manhattan (in other words, she's a waitress), singing her beloved standards in a dowdy little club and auditioning for the big break. In order to learn piano, she must endure lessons from a cynical slob (Andrew McCarthy), with whom, of course, she strikes sparks. Anyone with an inclination toward old musicals will probably be willing to go the extra mile for this awkward, low-budget offering. It never really takes wing, but does have two attractions: the fresh presence of Isabel Rose (who also co-wrote the script), who's hopelessly lost in the past; and a long roster of standards from the American songbook, which are given the affection they deserve. --Robert Horton! The conflicted protagonist of Anything but Love, the steamy and sardonic first novel by Gustavo Pérez Firmat (author of the acclaimed Next Year in Cuba) may remind some readers of Peter Tarnopol in Philip Roth’s painful sexual farce My Life as a Man, and others of Bob Slocum in Joseph Heller’s dark corporate satire Something Happened ... but Pérez Firmat has imbued his fiction debut with a Cuban-American flavor uniquely his own.
Some people would call Frank Guerra fussy, even compulsiveâ€"but they’re wrong. He simply believes in perfection. He strives to make every textbook he writes into a work of art, and he intends that every Cuba Libre he mixes come out textbook-perfect. (The key? Exactly six drops of lime juice for each ounce of rum.) And Frank also believes in romantic love.
In fact, he believes in love so strongly that he’s willing to divorce his faithful wife Marta (who’s a real mensch about it), lose his old friends, and even leave behind hi! s adoring daughter Emilyâ€"all for the sake of his new america! na, a se date but supremely sexy schoolteacher named Catherine O’Neal, or Cat for short. But it’s worth all the pain: Cat believes in their love, too.
So why, when he looks deep into Cat’s cool sphinx-like eyes, can Frank never penetrate into her depths? Why does he begin to see only his own gaze reflected there, as if from twin funhouse mirrors? Is she hiding something from himâ€"anything? (Everything, maybe?) Is his Cat merely toying with him? Frank finds the possibility disturbing. He expects his perfect love to be fully and equally reciprocated. After all, in an imperfect, unstable world filled with disappointment, isn’t there any ideal, anything, that’s really worth living for, maybe even dying for? Frank can’t think of anything but love.
Born in Havana, GUSTAVO PÉREZ FIRMAT is the author of the acclaimed, best-selling Next Year in Cuba, published in Spanish by Arte Público Press as El año que viene estamos en Cuba, described by Library Journal as “A! fascinating account of a 30-year search for a homeland and a new national identity... Engrossing and full of insights into the Cuban exile community,” and hailed by The Washington Post Book World as “A serious work of literature â€" as well as a ripping good book…[Perez Firmat] offers us an eloquent, amusing, often moving testament of a long moment in the troubled history of two countries.” A professor at Columbia University, he has published numerous nonfiction works and three collections of poetry.

Black Dynamite [Blu-ray]

  • Condition: New
  • Format: Blu-ray
  • AC-3; Color; Dolby; Subtitled; Widescreen
An all-star cast led by Michael Jai White is featured in this 1970's-style blaxploitation action fiilm about the legendary super crime fighter "Black Dynamite." The Man killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky HouseWhen drug dealers take out his kid brother, ex-CIA agent Black Dynamite (Spawn's Michael Jai White) makes like a karate-chopping dynamo to track them down. Armed with a .44 Magnum, a set of nunchucks, and a sexy 'stache, Big D starts out in the City of Angels, where ! his buddies Cream Corn (In Living Color's Tommy Davidson), a hustler, and Bullhorn (co-writer Byron Minns), a club owner, offer to lend a hand. The deeper Dynamite digs, the more endangered his life becomes as he uncovers a conspiracy to keep the black man down by flooding the streets with malt liquor and filling the country's orphanages with smack. Since the smooth operator has a way with the ladies, he also enlists Gloria (I Am Legend's Salli Richardson-Whitfield), a socially-conscious soul sister, to aid in his clean-up campaign. Director Scott Sanders and White, who co-wrote the script, collaborated on 1998's Thick as Thieves, and their chemistry shines through. If the supporting cast can be a little wooden, White gives Shaft's Richard Roundtree a run for the money with his cool-cat charisma. Set in 1972, Black Dynamite doesn't just act like a movie from the Superfly era, it looks and sounds like one, too, courtesy Adrian Younge! 's old-school funk score, Shawn Maurer's 16mm cinematography, ! a cartoo n credit sequence, and some carefully choreographed boom mic appearances. And dig those crazy cameos: Arsenio Hall as Tasty Freeze, Brian McKnight as Sweet Meat, and NBA veteran John Salley as Kotex. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
